About Us
Subito is an ecological and arboricultural consultancy built around a technology platform that scopes, prices and books tree and ecology surveys for UK planning projects in minutes rather than weeks.
Clients get a fixed quote and a confirmed booking online; we plan the fieldwork around their programme and deliver validation-grade reports straight into their submission pack. We’ve invested heavily in the Subito platform to ensure great performance and accurate deliverables — so our surveyors can focus on the fieldwork and technical judgement, not admin. Just the fun bits!
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced arboricultural surveyor to work with us on a subcontract basis, taking on tree surveys, Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA) and Tree Constraints Plans (TCP) for planning and development projects. Work is offered project-by-project, with day rates agreed in advance based on site size and scope. You’ll own the fieldwork and be responsible for writing accurate, validation-ready reports.
This is a flexible arrangement suited to an established self-employed consultant looking for additional project work — and who enjoys being outdoors on site, among trees.
What You’ll Do
- Undertake BS 5837:2012 tree surveys, recording species, dimensions, condition and category (A–U) for planning purposes
- Prepare Tree Constraints Plans (TCPs) identifying root protection areas, crown spread and development constraints
- Prepare Arboricultural Impact Assessments (AIA), assessing the effects of proposed development on retained trees
- Provide clear, defensible technical advice to Subito and, where required, directly to clients
- Liaise with Subito’s project leads to ensure surveys and reports meet client and planning deadlines
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Level 4 or 5 qualification in arboriculture (or equivalent), or demonstrable equivalent experience
- Lantra Professional Tree Inspection (PTI) certificate
- Professional membership of the Arboricultural Association (MArborA or above) or Institute of Chartered Foresters
- Strong working knowledge of BS 5837:2012, BS 8545:2014 and BS 3998:2010
- Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle
- Own professional indemnity insurance appropriate to consultancy work
- Own survey kit and PPE suitable for BS 5837 fieldwork
- Ability to work independently and deliver accurate, well-presented reports to deadline
Desirable:
- Previous subcontract or freelance consultancy experience
- Experience with AutoCAD, Keytree or similar tree survey software
- Familiarity with TPO and Conservation Area processes
- Experience delivering ecology surveys, such as bat roost surveys
Coverage Area
South East England (Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire and surrounding counties). Occasional projects further afield may be available by agreement.
Not a perfect match? Still apply. Spec sheets rarely describe a real surveyor 100% — if you’re solid on the essentials and keen to get on site, we’d rather hear from you than miss a good fit. As the saying goes: don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
Have a CV, example reports, qualifications and membership details ready before you start.
